Hip hop needs one thing your other dance classes do not: a clean indoor sneaker that never goes outside. That is the whole requirement, and it matters more than the brand on the side.

What shoes do you wear for hip hop dance?

A lightweight sneaker kept exclusively for the studio. It needs a flat, non-marking sole, enough cushioning for jumps, and a shape that lets the foot bend rather than holding it rigid.

The critical part is that they are indoor-only. A shoe worn outside drags grit onto the marley floor, which scratches it and makes it slippery for every class that follows.

Erin says Hip hop needs a clean indoor shoe, which means a pair that never goes outside. A light cheer-style sneaker is easier on the knees than a chunky street trainer and will not mark the floor.

Sizing Runs close to street size. These are cut narrow, so a wide foot should size up rather than long.

Can my child just wear their school trainers?

No, and most studios will say so directly. School shoes have been outside, and the floor is the studio’s most expensive surface. It is also a safety issue, because grit under a shoe turns a turn into a slip.

A cheap dedicated pair kept in the dance bag is a better answer than an expensive pair shared with the playground.

Erin says A cheaper way to get a dedicated indoor pair. Check your dress code, because some studios specify black or white only. Whatever you buy, keep it for the studio and nothing else.

What colour sneakers for hip hop class?

Check the dress code first, because plenty of studios specify all-black or all-white so a group reads as a group on stage. Where the choice is open, white shows scuffs and black hides them.

How should hip hop sneakers fit?

Close to street size, snug but not tight, with room to bend at the ball of the foot. Avoid a chunky running shoe with a thick raised heel; it stops the foot articulating and it is harder on the knees when landing.

Lace them properly. A loose sneaker in a fast routine is how ankles get rolled.

What else does a hip hop dancer need?

Comfortable clothes they can move in: a fitted top and joggers or shorts. Hip hop is the one class where the dress code usually relaxes, though street clothes are still out and hair still goes up.
